GRE PSR-800 CPU firmware U2.0 (raw image, community copy)
=========================================================

WHAT THIS IS
------------
CPU firmware U2.0 for the GRE PSR-800, as the raw encrypted image
"0602902e_U2.0.bin" ("0602902" is the PSR-800's FCC ID suffix, ADV0602902). It
survives only in the community GREFwTool repository (firmware folder, added
2019-12-10); GRE never offered PSR-800 firmware as a standalone download, only
through the PC application's update check.

U2.0 was announced on RadioReference on 2015-06-04 with two changes: "Fixed
Audio Boost handling for analog frequencies" and "EDACS ESK detection fixes".
It was delivered through the PC application (owners mention EZ Scan 1.09). CPU
2.0 appeared after GRE America had closed its US office (September 2014);
forum posts describe it as the work of a GRE developer on a volunteer basis,
and who published it is not established.

This is the only PSR-800 firmware file found. GRE's Phase II release (CPU U1.8
with DSP U1.3, 2013-01-15), the Phase II beta (CPU U1.7 with DSP U1.2, October
2012), 1.5 (Set Location, January 2012) and every other PSR-800 CPU or DSP
file were searched for and NOT found (see PROVENANCE.md). U2.0 is a CPU image
only; DSP U1.3 must already be on the radio for Phase II.

Unofficial WS1080-derived "DMR" firmware for the PSR-800 also circulates (for
example in the RadioReference thread "Need unofficial DMR files for my
PSR-800"). It is deliberately not hosted: it carries a date lockout, and
Whistler charges more to upgrade radios that have run it and warns DMR can be
disabled permanently on them.

APPLIES TO
----------
GRE PSR-800 running GRE firmware (loader not upgraded).

Must NOT be used on: a PSR-800 that has been through the Whistler Official
Upgrade (boot 2.0); the RadioShack PRO-18 (its own firmware, FCC ID
ADV0602903) or PRO-668; the WS1080/WS1088.

BEFORE STARTING
---------------
- GREFwTool, built from source with Qt 5.7 (see the GREFwTool entry); no
  prebuilt binary was found.
- 7-Zip to extract 0602902e_U2.0.bin.
- The PSR-800 driver (installed by GRE's EZ Scan Digital) and the mini-USB
  data cable.
- Read the current boot, CPU and DSP versions first (MENU at the welcome
message shows the version screen). CPU 3.x or DSP 3.1-4.6 means unofficial
firmware is on the radio: stop and read the PSR-800 Upgrades & Firmware
  volume.
- There is little to gain on a radio already at U1.8/DSP U1.3; the site's
  volume advises as much.
- Save the configuration and copy the microSD card.

INSTALLATION
------------
GREFwTool's procedure (from its README; not tested here):

 1. Extract 0602902e_U2.0.bin from the .7z.
 2. In GREFwTool Settings (only while disconnected), set Scanner Type to
PSR-800 and pick the COM port. Leave Firmware at PSR-800: do not use the
    transcode option.
 3. With the scanner powered off and unplugged, hold MENU and plug in the USB
cable; release MENU after the PC detects the scanner (CPU Update Mode).
 4. Click Connect; the tool shows the firmware version and CPU Update Mode.
 5. Click Firmware Update, choose the .bin, and wait for the progress dialog.
    The tool disconnects when finished.
 6. Do NOT use Set Time afterwards on a radio that has ever run unofficial
    firmware (date lockout).

VERIFYING
---------
Press MENU while the welcome message is displayed after power-up; the "uP Appl
Ver" line shows the CPU version (per GRE's 2012 beta notes).

IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG
-----------------------
- GREFwTool: "Failed updates will put the scanner into CPU Update Mode when
powered on. Retry the Firmware Update from step 3. The scanner can only be
powered off in CPU Update Mode by disconnecting the usb connection and
removing one of the battery cells in the scanner."
- Never run the CPU update in GRE's or Whistler's PC application with a
mismatched file: the bootloader erases the application firmware.
- Date lockout: on units with unofficial CPU 3.1/DSP 4.6, a clock past
2017-05-31 locks the unit and cancels DMR; a late-June DSP 3.1 build locks
after 2017-07-01 at "Waiting for USB". Loading U2.0 has not been shown to
clear a lockout; Whistler repaired such units (about $89 in 2017, chip
  replacement plus upgrade).
- If the radio will not accept U2.0, the remaining official option is the
Whistler Official Upgrade, whose 2025-26 availability is uncertain
  (legacyupgrade@whistlergroup.com).

DOWNGRADING
-----------
GRE offered no downgrade path. GREFwTool can load older images, but no older
PSR-800 image (U1.5, U1.7 beta, U1.8, U1.9) was found to load.

source hard-codes that directory. The server was not accessed with the
